Sunday night was the Grammy Awards, and overall it was a well put-on show. I thought the nominees were fair, and the deserved ones won in their respective categories. The performances were very fun and were definitely the highlights of the 3hr-long show. I didn't watch the broadcasted show; I was only able to catch it on youtube and on various blogs the day after.
However, I thought Taylor Swift's Album of the Year win was a complete joke. Clearly, she didn't win the award for producing a groundbreaking country-pop album, but people felt sorry for her for the VMA/Kanye incident. Her award should be retitled Make-Up-Award-for-Kanye's-Doucheness-at-VMAS award. By no means is Fearless Album of the Year-worthy. I can name many other album (even non-nominated ones) that are far more superior than hers (where's John Mayer? ;) ).
Now don't get me wrong, I like Taylor Swift; I think she's doing pretty well for herself and she seemed like a sweet enough girl. I thought You Belong With Me and Love Story to be very enjoybale, though not special in any ways. Enjoyable, yet ordinary. With a target market audience consisting primarily of teenage girls, it's not surprising her album sold a lot of copies, but sale doesn't translate to quality either.
I thought Lady GaGa derserved that award for Album of the Year, because it truly is. Call me biased since I'm a big fan, but you can't argue otherwise. Having five, five #1 songs on a debut album is a major achievement. She is one of the most creative artist out there who isn't afraid to go all out and entertain. The Fame has all the element to be Album of the Year; top-notch production, creative lyrics and themes, and it's both commercial and "artsy" that appeal to a greater mass. It's an all around well-thought out album.
Beyonce was a close call, but I Am...Sasha Fierce isn't Dangerously In Love. Though homegirl already broke records for wining 6 Grammys in one single night.
Overall, without the intention of hating on Taylor Swift, her win definitely shows The Grammy's diminishing credibility. What does it mean now to win a Grammy? Sell 3-4 million copies and sing about fairy tales and puppy love, (and have awful live performances)?
yes! thank you! your last paragraph said it all
