Maybe it's just me, but when I buy a magazine ($5-8); I don't just flip through it looking at the pictures only. I actually read the articles in them, even if they're kind of boring sometimes. I admit that I also enjoy looking at the pictures and the advertisings, but I thoroughly read the content as well. People might not know, but there is a lot of work and thought put into the making of magazines. Especially articles written by established and up-and-coming writers, journalists and editors. It doesn't matter so much what the topic is about; whether it is on fashion, politics, world news, sports, or hot girl of the moment, there's always something fun in taking the time to go through 2 or 3 pages of editorial journalistic work in a published glossy magazine. Perhaps I'm old school and still enjoy the tangibleness of published papers oppose to online alternatives (which will ultimately destroy the publishing industry soon :( )
This little rant is inspired by an event this morning when I was in the bus. I saw a girl literally just flipping through the pages of a Nylon magazine (with Kristin Stewart on the cover BUURRRRKK *see post below*). Now look, Nylon and Nylon Guys has to be the coolest magazine on newsstands and they have great fashion editorials as well as great articles on pop culture (their MUSIC ISSUE is the best; it is my source of inspiration to fill up my iPod). You don't just flip through a Nylon magazine like it's a Playboy or a local newspaper. I mean, I can't judge I guess; everyone is different and it's a free world so you do what you want. But maybe I'm sensitive to the subject of published work and its dying industry. You know what they say, you're not a writer until you're published, what will all our English majors and future writers and editors do? Blog?
